We've never seen an abalone pearl inlay on a ukulele top before - it's magical! There's a wisdom that emanates from this "The voyage collection" series designed by artist Sam Mangakahia. Each engraving evokes strong symbols of Maori culture. These ukuleles look great. The sound, meanwhile, is quite respectable and remains the same as that found in their laminated mahogany models like the KA-15T.

Previously reserved for the Japanese market, we received these models in Europe under the name Kiwaya and the designation “eco series.” In order to harmonize their offering, they have now decided to distribute the “eco series” in France and Europe under the name “Famous.”  Apart from the label, nothing has changed—it's still a Kiwaya made in Japan!  The instrument is made of laminated Hawaiian Koa, and offers exceptional acoustic performance with impressive volume, extremely well balanced. The neck profile is flat and easy to grip. The Arajuez strings installed on top are soft, offering a pleasant touch and a warm, mellow tone.  Kiwaya has a long history as a ukulele manufacturer, which makes this Eco series different from and above other ukuleles in the same price range.

Their instruments are made in Indonesia by the Ko'olau parent company, based in Hawaii. Their instruments are arguably in the upper mid-range, all made of solid wood and crafted to Ko'olau's exacting standards. This series is made from solid mango wood, increasingly prized both for its appearance and for the richness of its sound. The overall color is highly contrasting, with little variation from model to model. The satin finish offers a pleasantly soft, silky feel; for those who prefer a gloss finish, the same model is available on the site in gloss finish under the reference: MGCD.  The tone is lively and dynamic, both volume and sustain are excellent, and the sound is projected with a minimum of effort, all due to the resonance created by the lightweight construction. A very precise instrument, neither bright nor dark, the sound is perfectly versatile and lends itself to all playing styles.

Manufactured in Asia under the supervision of KoAloha, it features the brand's iconic aesthetic codes (crown headstock, musubi rosette). The comparison with KoAloha ends there, but we are nonetheless impressed by the quality of this instrument. Made from laminated sapele wood, it offers a warm, pleasant sound and exceptional playability. The instruments are well finished, attractive and robust, and are an excellent introduction to the world of the ukulele... all at an unbeatable price!

The solid spruce and acacia wood seem to get along well, and the careful finishing and fine tuning make this ukulele as comfortable as a Victorian sofa.

The sound offers warm mids, deep lows and crystal clear highs and allows for greater versatility in playing, regardless of style or genre. What is also striking is the dynamic range of this instrument, the notes are clear and full even at very low volumes, which is perfect for fingerstyle playing.  Note that the series has evolved and now offers a full headstock with very reliable Gotoh Planetary tuners, as on the UT3K or UT200 models, which is more convenient to install the strings in my opinion.
